Free Crochet Pattern - Easy Plarn Bottle Cozy

Image
Last year, I got a nice insulated metal water bottle for Christmas. I love the way it keeps things cold for near 24 hours, and can even keep hot things hot for 6! The first time I took it to Chorale rehearsal though, I found out what I like least about metal water bottles - you knock them over by accident and they go CLANG far more loudly than you'd like. So my crochet gears started turning in my head about how I can fix this problem, and I came up with a bottle cozy! But I wanted a stiff one that wouldn't stretch or sag... so why not use plarn? I had already made a market bag with it and knew its properties - easy to clean, sturdy, eco-friendly - so I got down to it, and the following pattern is the result! Almost an entire year later it's still in great shape, and instead of the clang it makes a dull clunk when knocked over so it serves its purpose well. This easy-difficulty pattern is written for a 3" diameter water bottle, but because it consists of a simple c

Tutorial Video - How to Make Plarn

Got more plastic grocery bags than you know what to do with? Consider plarn (aka. plastic bag yarn)! Plarn is sturdy, washable, economical, and environmentally friendly. This tutorial leads you through flattening, cutting, and joining your plarn loops. I have personally made plarn market bags and  metal water bottle cozies , but it has a variety of applications, including sleeping mats for the homeless, rugs or doormats, and more. A cozy for a 3" bottle takes 20+ grocery bags, and a market bag close to 90 (!), so you can easily clear your bags out and save them from the landfill at the same time. How eco-friendly! So get ready to make some plarn with me below! You can choose to just use the video, but the text instructions have some additional tips to get nice even plarn, plus the minute/second markers from the video where the different steps happen. 0:00 - Flattening Start by laying your bag out with handles pointing towards your dominant (scissor-using) si

With winter approaching quickly, what better pattern for my first post but this! These quick and easy bulky fingerless gloves with optional thumbs and mitten tips provide the warmth of a mitten, while having the option to keep your fingers free when you need them! My husband loves them. This particular pattern is made for wrist size 8-9" around, but if worsted weight yarn is used instead they may fit smaller hands (untested; feel free to leave a comment how it turned out if you try it!). They use only variations of half-double and single crochet stitches, and I have provided a list of terminology used at the beginning of the pattern. Enjoy!
